the 31 st…..

October 1, 2008

halloween ride ! costumes anyone ? just an idea. think about it and soon we’ll decide and put the call out. when considering the idea remember it could be a little chilly out and night time by six pm., food for thought, more to come……

another wet one

October 1, 2008

well people it rained again. as i did not make the ride due to some work nonsense i can’t speak for how the ride went. i heard from a few that seven people showed. not bad considering the cool temp. and rain. this decline in numbers can only partially be blamed on the weather. this is a fun ride and if you have the gear the coming dates should stay fun. by gear i mean clothing to wear during inclement conditions. cold is coming and i suppose we have to consider it as a major factor. none the less there are those of us who have the gear and the potential for the weather to be mild always exist so don’t hang the bike up for winter just yet. in fact don’t do it at all. stay vigilant, if you can’t we look forward to seeing you back on the ride come spring…..  see you all on the 31st……..

september ride

September 22, 2008

another month has passed people. as usual 6p.m. front and walnut. weather looks good so far. i hope we can all make it along with some fresh faces. the more the merrier. it would be awesome to have fifty riders. so gather some troops and we’ll take it to the street. see you on friday……….!

rainy ride…..

September 3, 2008

then there was nine………. the rain stopped us not. we will ride rain or shine! the truth is the ride was great. not cold at all, lite traffic thanks to the holiday, seems most of the state workers went home early and the bars were quite perhaps due to the rain, and front street was closed off in preperation of kipona. all in all a good ride. with less people the pace was up a little but we stayed in good formation and had no incidents. the ride was shorter than usual but we still made a good show of it. next month all of you who didn’t come due to rain be sure and bring a friend. with exception to this past ride we had a climb of seven or so people from ride to ride. this past ride could have had fourty riders so it would be hot if we had fifty the next one.

We are going for it!

NYPD Cop Busts NYC Critical Mass Bike Rider, nothing new

August 1, 2008

If you weren’t one of the million people that watched this video of an NYPD Officer body-checking a guy off of his bicycle in the last week, check it out now.

It happened while we were taking our cruise about Harrisburg and I have to say that we have it easy here. When I saw this I just felt appalled, and as Internet justice goes this officer lost his badge this week. As it turns out, this kind of thing isn’t rare and NYPD has had it out for their Critical Massers the last few years. Their tactics are interesting: use of mopeds, confiscating bikes (even cutting locks), arresting cyclists at stop lights and take note of the car-cutting-you-off tactic. Just saying, they’re cops and they do this for a living. After years of harassment and misunderstanding, it isn’t surprising that an officer could feel correct in body-checking a cyclist into the air and arresting him.

That being said, NYPD is missing a real opportunity to be part of the community it serves and protects. By all means, the Critical Mass movement is meant to bring awareness that might serve to protect the approximately 800 cyclists who die on our roads a year. Perhaps the cops could help bring awareness? Could they maybe get on their bikes and ride along? Probably not, but it would be better than ruining a good thing.
